Becoming a Father

So what is it like to become a father? It is a new identity, a daily process, imperfect by nature and not to be taken lightly. The moment when I met my firstborn son will forever be etched in my mind. I can hear the doctor saying “a little further”, “just a little further now”. I can see my wife’s exhaustion and pain, although I could never know what that truly feels like. I can feel her gripping my hand even now. I watched as a small body appeared into the awaiting arms of the doctor. I stretched to look for small arms, there were two. I looked for small legs, also two. I heard the exasperated cry of a newborn taking his first breaths of air. After a few tense moments, reassuring my wife that all was well, the doctor says “would you like to cut the cord?” and handed me the snips. With one careful cut, this new person, my son, was born. In that moment, I also became a new person with a new identity. “Father”

I have been blessed with two boys now. Nothing against girls, they are special too. It’s just that these two boys, my two boys, made ME a father. I’ve been witness to the beginning of two new lives that I helped to create. An experience that I get to live each day. I get to witness how brother’s learn to interact with each other. I have watched four years go by too quickly since the birth of my oldest.

A man can prepare, attend pre-birth classes with his wife, read books, ask questions of other men who are already fathers, but, nothing fully prepares you for the moment.

The opportunity to become a father is one of life’s special gifts. This new identity is something I hope to spend many years polishing and perfecting.

Recorded voice 1-(Beverley Trinkle) – “As a 17 year employee of UNOS I have seen first-hand the affect that organ donation has in saving lives. One of the most generous things that people can do is to become an organ donor and communicate this decision to your loved ones. One donor can potentially save 8 lives.”

Narration 6- Become an organ donor today. For more information or to become an organ donor, please visit “UNOS” at www.UNOS.org or “Donate Life America” at www.donatelife.net
